HOUSING
As a CE intern, you’ll live in the air-conditioned Meredith Willson Residence Hall in the Samuel B. and David Rose Building on the campus of the Juilliard School, right in the middle of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, an institution known throughout the world for art, music and theater. The residence offers 24-hour-security, a cafeteria, laundry room, computer lab and a lounge area with color television and pool table.
Interns are assigned to five-bedroom suites with two-and-a-half baths and a common living room. Each suite contains three double rooms and two singles. A resident assistant from Career Explorations will occupy one single in each suite.
There are single and double rooms; and room assignments are determined by CE Staff. A CE staff member occupies a single room in each suite and is on call 24 hours a day.
You will need sheets, blankets and a pillow for your bed (twin-size, extra-long sheets). You should also bring towels and a laundry bag or basket.
FOOD
Career Exploration’s interns and staff dine in the cafeteria of the Samuel B. and David Rose building located on the plaza level of the residence hall. Breakfast and dinner are provided cafeteria-style during the week and brunch and dinner on the weekends. Meals include hot and cold choices, something for every diet and palate.
Interns are responsible for purchasing their own lunch Monday–Friday as they will be eating at, or near, their internships.
Special dietary needs can be met, provided Career Explorations is made aware of such special needs beforehand.
TRANSPORTATION
Depending on the location of a student’s internship, there are numerous ways to get from our living quarters at Lincoln Center to work on a daily basis. New York City has one of the most extensive transportation systems in the country; so much of the city can easily be reached by public transportation.
Each intern receives a prepaid MetroCard, good for one month’s travel on buses and subways in Manhattan. Orientation includes our Passport to New York scavenger hunt to help you learn the public transportation system and to introduce you to both Juilliard and New York City. By the time you head to your internship, you will feel at home traveling around the city.
Interns are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to New York City. Students arriving at local airports, Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal and Port Authority will be met by a CE staff member and accompanied to the residence hall. The procedure will be reversed on departure.
EVENINGS & WEEKENDS
Beyond your internship, you’ll enjoy the excitement of the big city. CE arranges a diverse calendar of evening and weekend activities including theater, concerts, sporting events, museums, shopping, group dinners, and much more.
COLLEGE & CAREER PLANING
As you begin to plan your “life after high school,” CE provides perspective, advice and ideas to help you make important decisions. We bring in experts to talk about college planning and career options. You can ask questions, share concerns and begin to map out the next few years.
Optional college tours in the greater New York City area are also provided.
By special arrangement, SAT preparation is available.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
One Sunday, the interns and staff will participate in a community service project. Whether we work with senior citizens, feed the homeless or clean-up a park, we will work together to make a difference in our host city.
Your resident assistant will record the work you do and provide a certificate of participation.
CURFEW
Enrolled students will have a nightly check-in at 11:00 pm Sunday – Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
All interns are required to attend scheduled evening and weekend events. You may not miss your internship or planned evening and weekend activities to spend time with visiting family and friends.
