ELIGIBILITY
Who is eligible to participate in Career Explorations summer internship program?
Career Explorations provides a unique and invaluable opportunity for highly motivated teens to explore career interests in a professional environment. Career Explorations is open to students ages 16-18, who are motivated, hard-working and in search of new challenges. Most participants are rising juniors and seniors, but we will carefully consider other qualified applicants.
How many students will participate in Career Explorations 2009? Career Explorations will host approximately 160 residential students during the summer of 2009, 85 in New York and 75 in Boston. We also have spots available for day students who live in the Boston or New York City area and wish to live at home.
PROGRAM DATES
What are the program dates? The NYC program runs for a single 4-week session, while the Boston program runs for both a 4-Week and a 5-Week session. The starting date for all programs is the same.
4 Weeks: Friday, June 26th - Saturday, July 25th, 2009.
5 Weeks: Friday, June 26th - Saturday, August 1st, 2009.
INTERNSHIPS
Where will I intern?
Through your application, you indicate your interests and goals. CE works closely with you to find an internship that best meets your specific needs.
We screen all employers carefully to ensure that your work experience fits your goals and that you get the right amount of challenge and supervision.
What hours will I work?
Hours vary depending upon the company or organization, but most interns will work from 9am to 5pm. Intern specific details will be sent to you before the onset of the program.
What should I wear to work? Is there a dress code?
You will be working in a professional environment, so expect to dress accordingly. Prior to beginning your internship, you will be in contact with your mentor who will provide guidelines for appropriate attire and answer other questions about your placement.
Outside of the office, dress is comfortable and casual. Summer in the city is hot and humid, so be prepared. Sneakers, comfortable sandals or walking shoes are a must.

HOUSING
Where will Career Explorations participants reside?
CE New York interns live in a residence hall at the Juilliard School in the midst of Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side. CE Boston participants live on campus at Emerson College, located on the Boston Common. Dorms in both locations are air-conditioned and provide 24-hour security.
Will I have a roommate?
Students live in suites, primarily in double rooms in New York and singles in Boston. Approximately 6-8 people will live in each suite. A staff member will live in or be assigned to each suite.
May I request a roommate?
Yes and No. As a rule we typically encourage friends attending CE together to stay in separate rooms in order to promote a more inclusive program. We do, however, allow friends to room together in the same suite. Please let us know before June 1st if you have a suite-mate request so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Where will I eat lunch?
You will buy your own lunch on workdays. This is an opportunity to explore the area around your internship, to mingle with co-workers or to meet another Career Explorations intern who works in the same neighborhood.

SAFETY & SUPERVISION
Are students supervised in residence halls?
Career Explorations has a staff of Group Advisors who live in the dorm with the students, supervise their activities and maintain their overall welfare and safety. CE Staff is comprised of qualified and caring college graduates with extensive experience working with adolescents. Typically the ratio of staff to intern will be no less than 7 interns to 1 Group Advisor.
Is the residence hall a safe and secure place?
Visitors are screened 24 hours a day by security personnel at the entrance to the residence halls. No one may enter the hall without an access card. You will receive an access card at orientation.
Do I have to sign-in and out of the residence?
During free time, you may sign out with your Group Advisor as long as you sign out with at least one other intern. Sign-out sheets will identify the date, time, destination, companions and expected time of return.
With the exception of traveling to and from your internship, CE enforces the buddy system at all times. Participants are not allowed to leave the dorm alone under any circumstances.
Does Career Explorations have a curfew?
All students must be in the dorm and check-in with their group advisor at 11:00 pm Sunday – Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Students who are late for curfew will be sent home. There are no exceptions or extensions to the curfew.
What happens if I break a safety rule?
Career Explorations has developed a comprehensive set of safety rules and guidelines that will be strictly enforced. The use of tobacco, illegal drugs, drug-related paraphernalia, inhalants, alcoholic beverages, fireworks, firearms, other explosives and weapons are strictly prohibited at Career Explorations. If participants are found using or possessing any of these, it will be considered a major violation of the rules, and no warning need be issued before removing the participant from the program. Parents are responsible for the cost of dismissed student’s travel home, and no refund will be given.
